A Race Against Time

The increasing amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels, is a major contributor to climate change. This rapid increase in greenhouse gas emissions is causing global temperatures to rise at an alarming rate, leading to severe consequences for ecosystems and human societies.

Earth is becoming a Gas Chamber, with average temperature rising every day! The clock is ticking all too fast! If we don’t lessen global emissions, temperatures could rise to above three degrees Celsius by the year 2100, ending much of what we call ‘Life on Earth’.

Barely 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius increase in earth's temperature is what the global fraternity is losing its sleep over. This ostensibly small temperature increase with respect to what it was in the era just before the car replaced the horse and cart is potent enough to push our planet to a point of no return. A point where existential crisis will loom large. A point where unliveable heatwaves, floods, droughts, ravaging wildfires, incorrigible loss to bio-diversity, rise in sea levels, loss of coastal lands, terrible changes in precipitation patterns, outbreak of infectious diseases, hyperthermia or heat stroke as we call it, hot nights, yet hotter days, terrible loss to agricultural productivity, cardiovascular fatalities, asthma, other respiratory diseases, would let all hell break loose. Globally, an extra 4.9 million people will die each year from extreme heat should the average temperature race beyond 2 degrees Celsius.

How far are we from this Anthropogenic Apocalypse?

Not too far! ‘Climate Action Failure’ has been identified as the number one global risk with potentially the most severe impact over the next decade. Business as Usual has put and shall continue to push Humanity on a spiral of self-destruction. If we don’t submit to correction and get on course to slow down global greenhouse gas emissions, temperatures could rise to above three degrees Celsius by 2100, causing irreversible doom and gloom.

What is the way out?

If this scares you to the core as it rightfully should, then it is the time for Real and Concerted Action by all stakeholders with Utmost Honesty of Purpose. It is High Time we made a quantum leap for Climate Change Mitigation!

World has come a long way from Kyoto Protocol in 1997 to the Paris Agreement in 2015. While the narrative for Sustainability has been woven many times over, it is time for a little less talk and a lot more work on ground to do whatever it takes to quell Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
